It wasn't a smooth journey, but then, whoever expected a smooth journey? Still, a few blood zombies and an extremely unfortunate bandit hardly constituted serious trouble, and after a few days of travel, they made it back to the old estate.

Well, what was left of it. Almost two decades had passed since the House had fallen, only a little less than that since she'd last been there, and nature and time had taken care of what little Malbride and the Order had left behind. The old keep was a tumbled-down ruin mostly hidden from view by the vines that had grown over it, and only barely could she see the vague outline of the foundations. Somewhere under all of that was the old cellar, which had survived the fire and the fall, but there was very little here of the home where she'd grown up...

For a second, tears pricked her eyes, and she groped blindly for Squint's hand. He was there, of course. He was always there. Fathom... no, she had to try to remember, Ceridwen now... glanced up at the man she'd wed and saw that his eyes were distant as he stared at the rubble. Better to break him out of whatever thoughts that were trying to grab at him.

"Come on, we should find a good place to pitch a tent for the night," she said, pulling at his arm, away from the ruins. In a few days or weeks, others would start arriving, hands to help build actual buildings and people who were willing to start new lives here, but for now, they'd be living like they were still traveling.

Down the hill slightly there were the ruins of the farmsteads, and even less remained there. Wooden houses burned even more thoroughly, after all, and enough time had passed that the ash had been absorbed by the soil. Remarkably healthy weeds grew here, as well as a mixture of the plants that had originally been cultivated. Trees growing in, too, it'd be a pain to clear them.

"Did you ever come back... after?"

He shook his head. "Not since they dug me out. We started running hard and fast after that..." he looked down at her with a gentle smile. "Well... you know."

"There's a grave marker over there," she said, nodding. Not much of one, and only one grave for so many dead, but by the time someone got around to burying them, no one knew who was who (or if they did, hid that knowledge for fear of joining them).

"Maybe later," he said, turning towards her and embracing her. "We should find a good spot before it gets too dark."

Ceridwen looked around, trying to match the unfamiliar surroundings with the old lands of her childhood. "This way, I think." Back behind the old kitchens, there was a worn path to the river, one that not even 20 years of neglect could erase. And off of that path... an old deer-trail, now nearly as clear as the path itself. The animals had come back to it, then. But she'd traveled the path a thousand times as a young girl, and her feet still knew the way. Down to the left, up over the little hummock with all the ferns, right at the old oak... and the path suddenly opened up into a small glade on the edge of the river. It'd had been her favorite place to hide when she was a child.

"Ceri... this is beautiful," he said, walking up behind her and wrapping his arms around her, and she fought back tears again with a conditioned reflex.

"Only Enid and I knew about it," she said, looking around. It seemed miraculously unchanged. "I remember it being bigger, though."

"Well, you were a lot smaller then," he said with a laugh.

Without another word they fell to their normal tasks, she pitching the tent and he starting the fire. She laid out the bedrolls and carefully set the stones that were tied to Lin Zeshu near her pillow. 'Your ancestral home is beautiful', Maeda Kaito said into her mind, and she smiled briefly.

"Thank you, I thought so," she murmured in return, causing Squint... Tomas... to give her a questioning look, to which she held up her wrists in reply.

"I didn't think I'd say it, but I can't wait for everyone to arrive," she said, grabbing a piece of bread from where it was warming by the fire. "I got... used to people being around. I miss them."

"Well, Yoko and Erin and the rest... both Erins, actually, they'll be here soon... ish..." he said, sitting down next to her. "And New Liberty isn't that far."

"It's not like many people were staying there... but we could visit sometimes. And Najita and Miyako both said they'd visit. But it feels... odd."

"Agreed," he said, staring into the fire, before glancing worriedly at her. "But not bad?"

"No, not bad, just different. This... we haven't had a home in so long... it's just going to take some time to sink in." Though maybe less than she thought.. in HER grove, it feels more like home than she has in a long while, as if the place is welcoming her back. "I'm glad I could show this to you," she said, moving to lean against him.

"Me too." There were a few moments of silence, and then he smiled. "You know, a bit of privacy isn't entirely a bad thing. We do have work to do..."

Weird Aralis dream event was this weekend. For those not there, it involved a bunch of largely unrelated scenes in a variety of settings (some which fit in with the game world, and others, like 'modern club' and 'space marines', which didn't), but we were playing our characters (our some facsimile thereof) throughout. Was neat.

Wow, been a while since I posted. Am largely using other forms of media now, but I still like the journal-ish aspects of this so I can find stuff later. Real life stuff has mostly been along the lines of, "It snowed, I shoveled, it snowed some more, I shoveled, stupid snow, yay sewing! stupid snow." That's been most of the last several months. Also, root canals are not fun but also not as bad as advertised, and I am a clutz on an impressive level. There was also visiting Arizona and the cancellation of the Madrigal revel :(.

This past weekend was Aralis. The weather was... uncooperative. Friday night it snowed, enough to make the roads dangerous (which I think caught a lot of us by surprise), and there was a foot of snow-pack on the ground most everywhere, solid enough that people were slinging totes onto their shoulders and then stepping up onto the snow to walk (cause it was a lot safer and more direct than using the paths). Then there was the cold, a bit of melting on Saturday day, and then yet more cold which resulted in most of the game just collapsing after a few major encounters Sat night. Then there was more cold! I love my mattress pad.

Anyway, on to highlights )

Fun Aralis event. I'm still waiting for the weather to actually feel like 'spring'. This event it was (literally) freezing at night, and hot and sunny enough during the days that I got sunburned (note to self: acquire sunscreen). Way less emotionally wrought that my last several events, which was sort of a nice break. Plus, Fathom really needed that time to get her head screwed back on and to become less insane.

Some highlights:

- You want me to meet with who? Does he realize that's not the sort of thing you just 'get over'?
- Listening to the completely-reasonable request of the usery demon and finding that there was no fucking way Fathom could agree to it.
- Meeting in the tea house.
- Extremely rough fight on Jingoku island. At one point I was maimed in both my right arm and my right leg, rolled under a table to hide from the NPCs, with Phoenix's unconscious body on one side and Squint's unconscious and bleeding body in front of me while I tried to first aid him while ducking packets. Fun times. :)
- fun mission crawling through a trapped building to fight blood zombies, solve a riddle/puzzle to get our objective, and then crawling our way back out.
- "You regret that incident? Oh no, you don't regret it yet..."
- several of the NPCs at the art house were utterly hilarious. (And hearing that someone tried to hire the company to steal something I already had was pretty funny, too.)
- which leads to... the professor of psychology, who I think was my favorite NPC of the weekend. And wow watching his face while Sade explained her decision-making 'process' was fantastic...
- the tourist trip was pretty awesome, too. "You are in a fair amount of physical danger right now, yet you seem remarkably calm. Is this not alarming to you?" :Several New Liberty veterans glance at each other as we step over each other's bodies in a narrow hallway trying to get to bugs and shrug:
- watching people descend en masse upon the pile of puzzles and codes that I was handed
- realizing that Mitsuko wasn't being difficult, and that she really was *that* out of the loop on the elemental items thing. Oops.
- the trip in to the caverns was pretty awesome, too. Rough fight, but everyone worked together really well and was on-plan and we got through it relatively smoothly.
- being asked about Gwynneth wedding customs and not knowing what to say.
- standing alone in Jingoku watching the undead demon garandi people inflict most everyone and not being able to do anything to stop it while the demons commented on how much it must suck for me to be a silent witness to all of this.
- the Terrant fight was rough, too. And being stabbed in your spirit SUCKS.

Madrigal is nearly upon us, and I'm buried in prep, but want to get a few things down while they're still fresh in my mind. The weather was rough (yay snowstorm in the middle of the event! Icy doom path! Knee+ high snow everywhere!), but you know it's a good event when, asked to come up with my favorite moment, several different encounters were all vying for attention in my head.

Edited to add: crazy Nyorai stalking town. "Hey, wait a second... it's like I've seen this before." (Nyorai's player played the Jester in CW.)

Mostly recovered from Aralis. Been a long couple of days since then, tons of stuff at work, and I got my very first ticket, which an afterwards-review of driving laws seems to indicate was due to the policeman being in a bad mood and not me actually breaking the law. (Boo) Good Madrigal meeting last night. Have ALL the things to do.

Anyway, had a fun event, even if I was not allowed to sleep Friday night. :-P

Had a really fun time at Aralis. Fathom, less so, but eh, these things happen. Was up *way* too late both nights (Sat night actually had two aborted attempts at bed ended by other PCs). Need to nap more.

some highlights )

Am only mostly greater-unslept at this point, and almost ready for the move on Saturday. Cannot wait for all this to be done.

So on Saturday I made it to the first full Aralis event I've managed to get to all season. Sure, it was a one-day, but both [livejournal.com profile] sarrciano and I were there for the whole thing! How exciting.

Anyway, had a good time, even though the heat and humidity was AWFUL. Did very little fighting, but really, was ok with that. (See: heat and humidity)

Had a decent Aralis event. Some really cool moments, also some disappointments, and the bugs remain not-my-favorite creature to fight. I had a really hard time staying in Fathom's headspace this event. I suspect that had to do with being on a site that I NPC at A LOT, and staying in a cabin that contained several people that I often NPC with (and lacking several other people I often spend time with at Aralis). It was really easy whenever it was just me, [livejournal.com profile] dunriver, and [livejournal.com profile] marcus_sez_vote to fall into sorta quasi-IG joking around.

Ah well. Will work on it next time. Some fun moments: )

Last weekend was Aralis. It was cold, and fun. )

Yesterday I was sorta braindead, but I'm feeling a lot better today.

Because clearly I have nothing better to do (like, say, write my Madrigal PEL):

More ponies! )

The Aralis event was pretty awesome, and I am saying that despite there being utterly miserable weather for all of Saturday (until about 2:30 in the morning Sunday morning, when it randomly became kinda amazingly awesome and warm), and the fact that I managed to twist my ankle pretty good going up and down the stairs. Way to go, staff.

cut for long )

After the event ended, people were kind enough to help me with my stuff so I didn't have to walk down the hill again (thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] dunriver!). I had to leave somewhat faster/earlier than I wanted to, because we were meeting my parents/brother for dinner. My brother was up from NJ for the weekend and wanted to see me (and I wanted to see him), which I only found out on Wednesday, but they were awesome and agreed to meet us at the 99 near the site for dinner. So had a nice dinner with them and got to catch up and see my brother, and then they left and we switched tables to join the group that had come over from the site.

Good times.

Yay full Aralis event! I had a good time and was extremely busy with various things. On the ride home, we ([livejournal.com profile] sarrciano, [livejournal.com profile] thedeviantangel and I) figured out that the problem we have with war-storying after Aralis is that we're all on different teams and mostly secret plot, so while we might have cool moments... most of them we can't share. Oops.

That said, on to the public-consumption highlights here: )

Overall, a really good time. Site is still a muddy/icy mess, though there's less snow/ice every time I go to it. Hopefully by the time of the 7V event, the snow will be mostly gone, it'll be dry, and the road will stop dissolving every time we try to use it. Felt so bad for the people who got stuck at the end of the event.

I also feel kinda bad for the people who have only seen this site this past winter. It's really a nice site most of the time. Really.

Had a fun time at the Aralis one-day.

Well, Aralis is tomorrow, so naturally the weather is supposed to be relatively crappy. Ah well, at least I can stay indoors if I want.

Need to read some old PELs and remember what Fathom was doing...

I had an interesting weekend, starting at about 9:15 AM on Friday. This will be a long entry.

So I now have a cool new mask, costuming for my various characters, more tags than I can shake a stick at, several cool encounters I'm looking forward to (and several more that I can't wait to hear about from other people), and last night I finally got to hear from someone on my team what's going on at Aralis. Eeee! Excited for everything. Probably should focus on Madrigal first.
